Homelessness is never one’s choice, but defeating the situations, getting success, earning respect and admiration in life is great. This special post on “Street Children’s Day” will introduce you to some of the famous people who were homeless street kids or teenagers and spent many nights on streets and open air.

Homeless or poor children are often called street children who live on the streets and the streets become their living source and sleeping place. Street children can be found in many big cities of the world. According to UNICEF, 100 million homeless children are living on the streets around the globe.

There are varied causes children stay on the streets, mainly poverty, broken home or family, domestic violence, sexual or physical or emotional abuse, sexual orientation, substance abuse, mental health problems, and political unrest, even cultural and religious factors.

Street children are often subject to neglect, mistreat, abuse, even murder in some cases, though they deserve more positive behaviors from the members of our society. These incredible real stories of famous people who were homeless prove that we shouldn’t judge people by their present situations as life can change at any moment.

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin, the silent movie star, was not even 10 years old, had to support his brother and himself after his father’s death, while his mother was surviving in a mental hospital. On the streets of London, the young boys had to try to make a living by themselves. Finally, Charlie chose his parents’ show business as his livelihood and became the world-famous silent movie star.

Ella Fitzgerald, the “Queen of Jazz” was a homeless teenager. She had a troubled childhood because of her abusive stepfather. She worked for mafia until she was found by police and admitted into a school. Again, she ran away to be a singer and was homeless up to the time of rising at the Apollo Theater which helped her to make the dream true.

Lita Cabellut, the Spanish artist, spent her childhood on the streets of Barcelona. Her mother ran a brothel business in the city. Though Lita was left at home with her grandmother, she spent most of her time on the streets with other homeless children. She was preoccupied with survival, ran odd jobs, and didn’t attend school. After her grandmother’s death, she was ended up in an orphanage until she was adopted by a rich family at age 12. Now, Lita is one of the most successful Spanish artists, whose paintings sell for six figures.

Steve Jobs, the Apple entrepreneur, had to sleep on the floor of his friends’ rooms, collect and return Coke bottles to earn money for food and walk for miles to get a good meal while studying in college. Anyway, Steve left college and all his hard work done over the job paid off. He built the empire, Apple, one of the World’s most profitable companies.

Daniel Craig, the famous bond star, slept on park benches in London while studying at the National Youth Theatre because he had no money to rent a place for living. He made his first film rise in 1992 and the 007 actor now has a number of critically applauded movies on his resume and financial success.

Jim Carrey, the famous comedian became homeless at the age of 12 when his father lost his job. He dropped out of high school, slept in a VW camper van and a tent during this time, along with his family. Jim started his acting career in “In Living Color” and soon become a famous comedic star on the big screen.

He lived on the streets as a child, while his mother was struggling due to drug addictions and lived in public housing. He was adopted by a rich family and boarded on his football journey. The hit book and movie “The Blind Side” that inspires the world was the story of homelessness and struggle of Michael Oher.

Harry Houdini, the illusionist, ran away from home at the age of 12 to be a magician. A few years later Harry moved to New York City with his father. They had no enough money to arrange accommodation to live in the big city so they had to sleep on the streets. However, Harry started his first job as a professional magician at age 17 and soon ensured a pleasant lifestyle.

Jennifer Lopez became homeless at the age of 18 as she chose to be a dancer instead of college against her parents’ decision. She had to move from one place to another, even spent some nights in a dance studio’s cot until she got her first break as a dancer. Now, the singer, actress, producer, and designer owns a million dollars.

Hilary Swank
